My testimony regarding brother Witness Lee and the local churches

Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it are the issues of life. Prov. 4:23

Greetings. My name is Sterling Byassee. I would like to give my personal testimony regarding knowing brother Witness Lee and his teachings, and the church life that we practice in the local churches throughout the earth.

When I attended my first meeting with the church in Los Angeles, California, I heard brother Witness Lee ministering the word of God concerning a subject which I had never heard before, found in Proverbs 4:23, “Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it are the issues of life.”

His word impressed me. It was profound, it exposed me and exhorted me to always take care of my heart, that it would be purely for the Lord, so that He could freely flow within me and out from me as rivers of living water. This word that I heard that night ministered life to me at that moment, and I can say that even today it still ministers life to me.

Although I was very blessed to know the living, profound teaching of brother Lee, and to participate in some of the meetings of the church in Los Angeles, I did not quickly enter into the church life. I wanted to take the necessary time to thoroughly study what I had found. At that time there were many strange Christian groups, and sects were emerging in many parts of the United States.

I took notes on everything I heard, and afterwards I would study the notes and compare them with what I read in the Bible. I gave myself to much prayer regarding God’s will for my life, especially with respect to where I should meet, because I knew that this decision was going to be very important and have a long-lasting effect on my life.

Having visited different Christian groups and denominations, I could see that the church life was not simply another good Christian “free group” that appeared for a time and later would disappear. Nor was it another religious denomination. It was different. Never had I heard of a “church life” before this, nor had I experienced something so rich in my life.

For this reason I gave myself to study the ministry of Witness Lee, attend his trainings, and attend the meetings of the church. I did all of this while I still stayed in the Christian group to which my family had belonged for approximately 100 years.

Little by little I could see the sincerity of the living of the brothers, the deepness of the truths that they taught, and the reality of the church life.

Finally, after 8 months I decided to leave the group with whom I was meeting and join myself to what had become known as the Lord’s recovery. I was certain of this decision because of my studying the Word and my prayers to the Lord. I felt certain of this decision the day that I made it, and I still feel the same today, 48 years later.

After over a decade, some Christians began to write articles against brother Lee and the local churches. And with time, two authors wrote two books against us. They called brother Lee a false teacher and the local churches a “cult.” It was not easy to hear these things.

Some suffered permanent damage with their familial relationships because of these misunderstandings. All of us experienced some sort of suffering. Some lost their jobs, we were despised by some and considered dangerous persons, persons with whom people should not be associated.

If you have never experienced such a situation you cannot understand how much it hurts to be misunderstood, belittled, and rejected by Christian brothers and at times your own family.

In particular, there was constant opposition coming from a group called the Christian Research Institute, or CRI. Three young, relatively new believers studied the teachings of Witness Lee and later published their judgments against him. These publications were propagated by this institute which was famous as a protector of the orthodox faith and for producing evidence against sects, false teachings, and heretics. The whole world believed them.

Although we tried to clarify the misunderstandings and meet with them face to face, they never gave us an opportunity, because they considered us as a heretical sect. That notwithstanding, we continued practicing the normal church life, preaching the gospel as well as we could, and loving and serving the Lord, bearing His reproach.

Later, about eight or nine years ago, to our surprise, Hank Hanegraaff, the director of CRI, felt obligated to re-study the teachings of Witness Lee and the practices of the local churches. One of his close friends had come to personally know some of the brothers that were serving in the local churches, and told him, “Hank, you are mistaken.” These words shook brother Hank.

He had inherited all of the misinformation that he had regarding brother Lee and the local churches from the research done 25 years previously. Hank assigned one of those still with him, along with the editor of the Christian Research Journal, to investigate again the teachings of brother Witness Lee and the practice of the local churches.

Thus, Gretchen Passantino and Elliot Miller began their investigation again, now more mature, more pure, and more sincere. They had much reason to discredit brother Lee, because if it turned out that they were mistaken, they had much to lose: the respect and trust of tens of thousands of people, both nationally and internationally, who received their books, seminaries, and radio programs.

But, the more they researched, the more they realized that they had misunderstood the deep teachings of brother Witness Lee. They were young people when they had accused him of being a heretic. This time as they re-investigated him, they were not so quick to judge and come to conclusions.

We Were Wrong - Christian Research Institute (the Christian Research Journal)Eventually the director of the institute himself, Hank Hanegraaff, was involved in the research, not just reading and studying, but also attending meetings of the local churches in the United States, China, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and London. He spoke with members of the churches who did not know who he was, and he spoke with the elders.

After 6 years of this manner of personal and first-hand investigation, the three reached this conclusion: There is no other way to say it, we have to say with shame and truthfulness – we have made a big error in judgment, we have misunderstood the orthodox teachings of brother Lee and the local churches. We have to say it as it is: we were wrong.

They published this in their journal. They spoke of it publicly and on their radio programs. They did everything possible to clarify this serious misunderstanding and misinformation that they had propagated over the whole earth.

Thank the Lord that we and our brothers and sisters at CRI are no longer at odds, but we are enjoying sweet fellowship with one another. We do not agree over every doctrine in the Bible – and the Bible does not demand that we do, but we are one with regards to the common faith in our Lord Jesus Christ as our God and Savior, and in the fact that the Bible is the Word of God, inspired by God and infallible.

If there are any who believe that we are a cult, we invite them to speak with us, calmly and soberly as brothers in the faith, and on the basis of the Bible, the Word of God. It may help to look into the published findings of CRI as well. We hope that this will be of help to clarify any doubts or misunderstanding and misinformation that anyone may have received from others who do not truly know the teachings of Witness Lee and the practices in the local churches.

MI TESTIMONIO RESPECTO AL HERMANO WITNESS LEE Y LAS IGLESIAS LOCALES

Saludos.
